What is alignment? What is the first thing that comes to mind when I say the word Alignment? Your car? Your teeth? What about your body? The way your body is aligned can affect every aspect of your life both physically and emotionally.
Some symptoms that can come from poor alignment can be; fatigue, depression, body ache, knee pain, hip pain, headaches, ankle pain, back pain, poor circulation, sciatica and much more.
Think of the body as a fine tuned car that if not lined up correctly will burn out both tires, use more gas, and then have the engine seize in the middle of the freeway.
The body can act the same way. If your hips are not sitting in the right place, your gait (the way you walk) will be affected. Your knees will start warring unevenly; your upper body will start compensating which can lead to disk herniation, limited range of motion, headaches and over all fatigue. This happens because your body is doing 10x the amount of work it was doing before it fell out of alignment.
A lot of times when we think of body alignment we think of what a Chiropractor does by aligning the bones or the structure, but this is only one part of a bigger picture. You have to look at the whole body and all its parts from head to toe.
Your muscles, tendons, ligaments and facia all pull in different directions. If one pulls harder than the other, then all the other tissues have to work twice as hard to keep the machine running. After a while they get tired of doing two jobs and begin to fail. This is when the body falls out of alignment and you can start experiencing pain.
What can you do to stay in alignment? First is exercise regularly and evenly. What do I mean by evenly? If you work your chest, work your back, think balance. If you don’t you could look like Sven and have trouble wiping your butt in the morning.
The next thing you should be mindful of is variety. I hear a lot of people love spinning. The problem lies when spinning is all they do. When this is the only exercise you do only certain muscles are being developed while others are being neglected. This can cause huge alignment issues. Solution: Vary your workouts, spin one day but do weights on another. The more variety you have the better balance your body will achieve.
Lastly start out with a clean slate. Find a massage therapist that understands the body and how it interconnects. If you start a new workout routine after cleaning up your alignment then you will be strengthening your self within a proper alignment.
